iNuclear Webinar on Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources

Some important concepts

Sealed Radioactive Sources: Radioactive material that is permanently sealed in a capsule material that is permanently sealed in a capsule, or closely bonded, in a solid form and which is not exempt from regulatory control.  


Disused sealed radioactive sources: A sealed radioactive source which is no longer used, and is not intended to be used, for the practice for which an authorization has been granted.


Authorization: A permission granted in a document by a regulatory  body to a natural or legal person who has submitted an application to manage a SRS. The authorization can take the form of a registration, a license of alternative effective legal control measures.


Orphan source: A SRS which is not under regulatory control, either because it has never been under regulatory control  or because has been abandoned, lost, misplaced, stolen or transferred without proper authorization.


Conditioning: Those operations that produce a waste package suitable for handling, transport, storage and/or disposal. Conditioning may include enclosure of DSRS in disposal. Conditioning may include enclosure of DSRS in containers, and, if necessary, providing an overpack.


Storage: The holding of SRS in a facility that provides for its containment with the intention of retrieval.


Disposal: Emplacement of SRS.


Inappropriate Disposal: Emplacement of SRS in an appropriate facility without the intention of retrieval.


During the lecture, we were made to understand how a sealed source can be classified as a disused sealed radioactive sources.
Social Consequences of Radioactive Source Accident:
Exposed person become socially outcast
Psychological Problem
Public question to government’s management techniques
Intense media interest
Below are some basic findings:
•SRS at the end of their useful life have caused serious accidents
•SRS are often at their most vulnerable at the end of their useful life
•Majority of these incidents and accidents could have been avoided if SRS had been properly controlled

The IAEA is contributing enormously to its member state’s management techniques of DSRS (Disused Sealed Radioactive Source).

At present, most countries in the world have participated in the code of conduct for the safety and security of radioactive source management, and manage their own radioactive sources and waste radioactive sources in accordance with the code. In addition, only a few countries have implemented the final disposal of waste radioactive sources. According to the characteristics of the waste radioactive sources, some of them are disposed near the surface and some of them are disposed in a medium depth. Generally, the borehole disposal is in the range of medium depth disposal, which is suitable for countries with only a small amount of waste and waste radioactive sources. At present, Malaysia has completed the preliminary work of borehole disposal and site selection, and the regulatory department is reviewing the site selection report; Ghana also plans to carry out the relevant work of borehole disposal.
